Frequently asked questions

We support GP-referrals, self-referred individuals and NDIS participants.

Here are some of the questions I'm commonly asked about mental health occupational therapy, appointments, referrals and what to expect.

  • There is no set number of mental health occupational therapy sessions you need to have. The right amount of support will depend on your goals, circumstances and what you would like help with.

Some people benefit from a small number of focused sessions, while others prefer ongoing support. We’ll work together to identify what would be most helpful for you and regularly review your progress.

You are not locked into a particular number of sessions. The aim is to provide the right level of support for you, rather than continuing therapy simply because you have been told you need a certain number of appointments.

  • Mental health occupational therapists and psychologists can both provide valuable mental health support, but we often approach therapy from different perspectives.

As an occupational therapist specialising in mental health, I’m interested in how your mental health is affecting your everyday life and your ability to do the things that are important to you.

This might include looking at your:

    • daily routines and structure

    • sleep and rest

    • relationships and connection

    • parenting and family life

    • work and study

    • self-care

    • emotional regulation

    • confidence and sense of identity

    • ability to manage everyday tasks

    • balance between responsibilities and your own needs

Rather than focusing only on how you are feeling, mental health OT considers the relationship between your mental health, your environment and your everyday life.

For women during pregnancy and after having a baby, this can be particularly helpful. Perinatal occupational therapy can support the significant changes to your routines, identity, relationships and roles that can occur during pregnancy, postpartum and the transition to parenthood.

  • Once you book an appointment online, you’ll receive confirmation and the information you need to get started.

You’ll also be sent an intake form to complete before your first appointment. This gives you an opportunity to share what has been happening, what you’re finding difficult and what you’re hoping to work on.

It also helps me prepare for our time together so we can focus on what matters most to you.

If you don’t have time to complete the forms before your appointment, that’s completely okay — we can work through them together.

Your first appointment is an opportunity to get to know each other, understand what has brought you to Ready to Rise and identify the areas where you would like support. We’ll then work together to develop a personalised approach based on your goals and circumstances.

Appointments are available in person in Melbourne and via telehealth across Australia.

  • No. You do not need a diagnosis or referral to make a private appointment with Ready to Rise.

You can self-refer and book an appointment directly online.

If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for eligible occupational therapy services. A referral from your GP is required for Medicare-funded sessions.

If you are accessing occupational therapy through the NDIS, you will need appropriate NDIS funding and the relevant referral or plan arrangements.

If you’re not sure whether you’re eligible for a Medicare rebate, NDIS support or another funding pathway, please get in touch before booking and we can help you understand your options.

  • Mental health occupational therapy can help when your mental health is making everyday life feel harder.

    This may include support with:

    • anxiety and overwhelm

    • low mood and depression

    • stress and burnout

    • adjustment to major life changes

    • pregnancy and postpartum mental health

    • the transition to parenthood

    • changes in identity and confidence

    • establishing routines

    • sleep and rest

    • relationships and connection

    • parenting and family life

    • returning to work or other meaningful activities

    • managing everyday responsibilities

    • building practical coping and self-care strategies

Your therapy will be tailored to your individual circumstances, strengths and goals.

  • Yes. Perinatal mental health is a particular area of focus at Ready to Rise.

Support is available during pregnancy and after having a baby, including the early postpartum period and the broader transition into parenthood.

You may be seeking support because you are experiencing anxiety, low mood, overwhelm, birth-related distress, changes in identity, difficulties adjusting to motherhood, relationship changes or simply feeling that things are harder than you expected.

You don't need to wait until things become overwhelming before seeking support.

  • Yes. Ready to Rise provides mental health occupational therapy via telehealth across Australia, as well as in-person appointments in Melbourne.

Telehealth can be a convenient option if you have a baby or young child at home, live outside Melbourne or simply feel more comfortable accessing therapy from your own space.

  • Yes. Babies are welcome at in-person appointments where appropriate.

The transition into parenthood can make finding time for yourself difficult, so Ready to Rise aims to make accessing support as practical and welcoming as possible.

  • You don't need to know exactly what kind of therapy you need before making an appointment.

If your mental health is affecting your everyday life and you're looking for warm, practical and personalised support, mental health occupational therapy may be a good fit.

If you're unsure, you're welcome to get in touch before booking to discuss whether Ready to Rise is the right service for you.
