Mental health occupational therapy Melbourne | What Does a Mental Health Occupational Therapist Do? (And How Is It Different to a Psychologist?)

If you've been searching for support for your mental health, you've probably come across psychologists, counsellors, social workers—and perhaps, more recently, a Mental Health Occupational Therapist.

Many people pause when they see the title and think:

"Occupational therapy... isn't that for helping people return to work?"

It's a common misconception.

Mental health occupational therapists are university-trained allied health professionals who help people improve both their mental wellbeing and their ability to participate in everyday life. While feeling better is important, our work doesn't stop there. We also focus on helping you live in a way that feels manageable, meaningful and sustainable.

What does a Mental Health Occupational Therapist help with?

At Ready to Rise, I support adults experiencing challenges such as:

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Intrusive thoughts and OCD

  • Miscarriage

  • Birth trauma

  • Adjustment to parenthood

  • Identity changes after becoming a parent

  • ADHD

  • Routine difficulties: sleep, feeding, self care

  • Social isolation

  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday life

Mental health can affect every part of daily living—from getting out of bed and preparing meals to maintaining relationships, returning to work, caring for children, or finding time for yourself.

Occupational therapy looks at the whole picture.

What makes occupational therapy different?

Psychologists are experts in understanding thoughts, emotions and behaviour.

Mental Health Occupational Therapists certainly explore these too, but we also ask:

  • How is this affecting your daily life?

  • What's getting in the way of doing the things that matter most to you?

  • How can we make everyday life feel more manageable?

For a new parent, therapy might include exploring why showering feels impossible—not because you don't know it's important, but because exhaustion, anxiety, feeding schedules and unrealistic expectations have all collided.

Together, we look at your routines, environment, roles, nervous system, relationships and supports to find practical, compassionate ways forward.

Why occupational therapy can be particularly helpful during the perinatal period

Pregnancy and early parenthood bring enormous changes—not just emotionally, but practically.

You may be adjusting to:

  • New routines

  • Sleep deprivation

  • Changes in identity

  • Relationship shifts

  • Returning to work

  • Caring for a baby while trying to care for yourself

These are all "occupations"—the everyday activities and roles that give our lives structure and meaning.

Supporting these changes is at the heart of occupational therapy.

Rather than simply helping you cope, we work together to create a life that feels more sustainable for you and your family.

Do I need a psychologist or a occupational therapist?

The answer is that it depends on your goals.

If you're looking for support to better understand your thoughts, emotions and experiences, a psychologist may be a great fit.

If you're finding that your mental health is making everyday life feel difficult—whether that's parenting, relationships, routines, work or self-care—a Mental Health Occupational Therapist may be exactly what you're looking for.

Many people also benefit from seeing both professionals as part of their support team.

How Ready to Rise can help

At Ready to Rise, I provide trauma-informed Mental Health Occupational Therapy for adults across Australia via tele-health, with in-person appointments available in Essendon, Melbourne.

Together, we'll explore not only how you're feeling, but how you're living—because recovery isn't just about reducing symptoms. It's about helping you reconnect with the life that's important to you.

If you're curious about whether occupational therapy is the right fit, I'd love to chat.
